Should You Start A Side Hustle Around Your Passion?

I have a secret to share.

It’s been a quiet few days in the market compared to the $AMC circus last week.

In case you didn’t realize June is here.

What does that mean? It’s time for those monthly contributions.

Mine involved a $300 purchase of VOO in my brokerage and a $200 dollar purchase of VTI in the Roth IRA.

As far as the Bitcoin update we might be getting below $30,000!

Moving on, since we finally got a break in the stock market I wanted to get into a business topic this week.

As one who has two “side hustles” based around my hobbies I wanted to cover some things that aren’t always talked about when trying to monetize your passion.

I’m going to note three quick things I’ve learned from my experiences.

First, let me cover my background. As most of you likely know I have a twitter account where I primarily talk about investing. I do have another “hustle” that I haven’t mentioned on Twitter.

This is only for Always Invested subscribers.

For the past two years I have been making YouTube videos based around another passion of mine, fishing. From filming, to editing, to learning SEO on YouTube I have really enjoyed the process of growing my channel to around 2k subscribers.

As a result of having these small “businesses” based around my passions I have came across a few things I wish I would have thought about in the beginning.

Can It Make Money

Before going the business route create a plan for how you will monetize.

In some cases this will be easier than others. For example, if you enjoy woodworking you can simply sell your creations. Though for someone who enjoys gaming they might have to focus on building an audience first.

Lesson here is just have a plan and a lot of patience.

Extra Effort

This is a big one.

Normally a hobby or passion is something you truly enjoy doing. Turning this activity into a business can stain that passion if you aren’t careful.

Here is another example. For me I have always loved fishing, but I’d be lying if I said filming and editing my fishing trips isn’t a hassle sometimes.

So while having a business around something you enjoy seems awesome, make sure you don’t ruin your love for it.

Remember, no amount of money is worth your happiness.

Ignore The Haters

This is one that comes anytime you put yourself out in public.

Whether that’s tweeting your finances, filming yourself, or dealing with clients, people will always have something to say.

When this happens, because it will, laugh it off and keep chugging.

They’ll be asking how you did it when they realize your hobbies are paying the bills.

Conclusion

If you have a hobby or passion you have thought about starting a side hustle around I encourage you to give it a go.

This is your sign.

Know that there will be bumps in the road, but that is to be expected.

Finally, and most importantly, have fun with it.
